Handbag Books - Amazon Favorites

Handbags:The Power of the Purse by Anna Johnson - Everything you always wanted to know about handbags but were afraid to ask! Great little paperback book that goes into interesting detail (but not too detailed!) about the history of this fabulous accessory! Included are interesting quotes by famous handbag designers (even one quote by Miss Piggy about bags!). The photos are great and the facts are presented in an interesting manner, making this book an easy read.

The Hip Handbag Book by Sherri Haab - This book is a great beginners handbag book for those that are "sewing challenged"! The bags are easy to make and are genuinely creative ranging from a duct tape purse to a placemat bag. You are given step by step easy to follow directions, including the basic tools you will need. I definitely give this book a "thumbs up" for beginners!

Making Handbags and Purses by Carol Parks - This book is actually a hardback instruction book on how to make a variety of handbags. An example of handbag patterns include everything from a tapestry clutch bag to my personal favorite, something called the "teardrop" bag. The instructions are clear and precise but, if you are mathmatically challenged (like I am!) the actual patterns are reduced in size in the book and it was difficult to figure out the actual pattern piece sizes. (For example, the teardrop bag must be enlarged 400%). Other than that, this is a must have book for handbag fanatics!
Bags by Claire Wilcox - This is a great little hardback book that is a must for true purse fanatics! I personally love the way the chapters are broken into chronological periods of time in the history of handbags. If, for example, you are obsessed with recticules, just go to chapter Four which is all about this particular phase in the evolution of the handbag.

Carried Away by Farid Chenoune - What a great book! The ultimate coffee table book for handbag fans! The author ties together handbags throughout history and even different cultures in one magical tour of our obsession with the bag. The illustrations are wonderful and range in scope from a photo by Samuel Beckett in "Happy Days" to a fur and leather pouch from Russia in the 4th century. If you want to invest in only one handbag book that has everything, this is the one to buy!
